Circus Performance for the Elderly Audience

Our Story

Both of us have elderly parents, and during the pandemic we saw how the elderly population was not only deeply affected but also neglected, specifically in terms of culture engagement. While we both have experience creating performances for diverse age groups, we recognized a particular need to focus on the elderly and their unique environments. We felt a strong calling to create for this often overlooked demographic, who are frequently sidelined by society.

Our goal was to create a quality circus performance that bring the excitement & strong impact of a live circus performance to elderly homes and to use our creativity as circus artists to overcome the challenges posed by these environments. We want to ensure that the magic of live circus performance could reach and enrich the lives of the elderly.

How?

During two years we’ve done week-long creation residencies in various countries, focusing on the theme of “The Path to Wisdom”. During these residencies, we explored the integration of live music into our circus disciplines, as research shows that it has a profound impact.
This approach allowed us to gain valuable insights into the challenges of creating a circus show inside elderly home spaces. More importantly, it helped us understand what truly resonates with this audience and how to design a performance that addresses their unique needs in meaningful and thoughtful ways.
Through this process, we also discovered other pressing issues faced by elderly homes, such as a lack of human contact, playfulness and colors. To address those issues we created a scene that directly tackles those themes.
It was crucial for us to involve our audience not only in the performance itself but also throughout the creative process. At the end of each residency, we visited local elderly homes, where we presented a work-in-progress and asked for feedback from both residents and staff.
